Fisheries: Roles - the excitement!

Picture it: father and son on a port of a Lake, their bare legs dangle above the water, each of them keep wait a fishing rod . There is one scene popular children and families, simply inspire bound because fishing was long used by people for relaxation and industry.

Simply put, covers all tasks of hunting and catching fish and other aquatic animals such as squid, Octopus, turtles and shellfish fisheries . Fishing began about 10,000 years ago. Fishing a game was for the lower classes in the ancient Greece, but the Chinese skill as a gift from the gods considered. The ancient Egyptians were implemented for their fisheries and improvised fishing methods, known in pictures in the pyramids and Papyrus cover documents.

Fishing can take on many forms, from the simple boat on the Lake, and the occasional conversation among friends or related today. to the larger industrial boat in the middle of the sea, with its gigantic NET.

The following are some species of common fishing methods .

o with the right skill, and with only a few pieces of equipment, can catch some fishermen fish by hand - without even slides from fish! Hand fishing is practiced in some villages around the world, where shallow water of rivers, or by the sea, close to a source of fish for dinner.

o with a spear, bow and a keen eye, can some Fischer engage in spear and bow fishing. This requires great strength and skill, and it has been practised for centuries. In fact, fishermen can use with the right equipment, bow and arrow only, to catch fish!

o other fishermen networks in their body of water of choice launched. Such a method, sometimes known as a cast net fishing, can farmers a larger catch - this, can lead to you but also undesirable (or unintended) animals or even objects fang. These include dolphins, seals or even trash.

o greater fishing vessels engaged in trawling, or dragging a large net by the sea, so that to catch what can collect it on the net. Fishing, other animals, such as cast net to catch such as sharks or trawling can baby whales.

o A harmful version of trawling is dredging in the bottom of the sea in the hope that more and more fish swim is disturbed closer to the surface and into the net.

o A common method of fish catch is attached using a fishing line with bait at the end. This is generally used for recreational purposes, and includes some skills and "always the fish to bite." A variant of this method is fly fishing, in which colorful, feathery objects serve as bait, and where a fishing line is cast at an angle to the surface of a body of water. Fishing -Enthusiasten is often knee-deep in the water, while this is happening.

o fisheries is this time done through a hole on the surface of an iced body of water an of line Fishing. Ice fishermen cut a hole in the ice, the still liquid water and the fish swim under to make available.

o some fishermen layout fish traps, which are meant to lure, fish and cage, so that fishermen they can be out much later contraptions.

o not all fishing methods are mild. Some fishermen use their desire, more fish catch toxins such as cyanide, poison entire populations of fish, which can then collect them by hand. This method, toxins but also juvenile fish, so that no more fish for the next generation, and no harvest for the next catch.

Another dangerous method requires the use of dynamite. This is common in the waters of South-East Asia, where to hide fish often in corals.

o electrofishing is a new, non-invasive method of fishing. It's about passing electrical currents through water, and a fish on the source of the current be lured, then disabling it at the moment, so that it can be harvested. Electrofishing, required but relatively easy skill to ensure that no unintended animals are damaged.

Fishing is always an exciting and relaxing activities - and it can lead to a delicious dinner! If you will be done with minimal damage to the environment, it is to bear enough fish links for fisheries in the coming generations then certainly.

CARP fishing you sessions - Extrême Orient

The "Lac de Madine" seems to be the No.1 big water destination this year and as such, has usurped "Foret d' Orient" at the top of the French carp waters tree. Rumours have been rife in the press of late that "Orient" is finished and no longer holds as many big fish. Well, results by friends of mine over the last 12 months have been equal to, if not better than years prior to the "vidange". Reports of catches of fish to mid-sixties certainly caught my attention. A more recent capture by a French angler, of a 65lb 4oz fish helped renew my interest in a water where I have never had much success.

So it was with huge anticipation that I agreed to my friend Laurent's invitation to try an assault on this most daunting of waters. Orient is a veritable inland sea covering some 2600 hectares. Despite its size, and typical of French waters, the night sectors are very limited.

At the agreed time I rolled into the car park at the cafe in Geraudot and sat down with a cold beer to await Laurent. The conditions were ideal with a strong wind blowing and the forecast for some nasty weather for the next 48 hours. You see Orient is not a difficult lake, its the rough conditions and its size that increase its difficulty, the worse the weather the better ones chances of catching. Rotten conditions seem to bring the fish right into the bank, thus increasing the chance of a take.

My friend Laurent has a lot of experience on the water, having already had numerous fish to 54lb. I had yet to break my duck. After a swift "demi" or two, we headed for the Geraudot bay area, a legal night zone and the haunt of the famous "Bulldozer". As soon as we arrived at the water's edge, Laurent gave me a grin and exclaimed that there was no need too look at other spots on the lake, here was perfect and we were sure to catch. Such confidence rubbed off on me and I couldn't wait to get set up. Laurent seems to have an uncanny knack of knowing when the conditions are just right.

We inflated his Zodiac and went out on the water to "echosound" our area. Geraudot has virtually no features other than weed. This stretched out for about 150 yards from the bank then suddenly stopped in 23 feet of water. No other features could be found so we decided to fish just off the back of the weed bed. We placed our markers and leaded around from the boat, finding a hard lake bed and a very fine layer of bottom weed. We went back to the bank to set up.

Rigs were simple, no need to over complicate matters for these relatively naive fish. I set up an amnesia hook link, knotless knotted to a size 2 Continental boilie hook, with 8 feet of 25lb amnesia as a snag leader and 5 ounce leads in Korda line clips.

I then rowed out to bait up with maize, hemp, tigers and boilies. My hook baits were Mistral Crab and Crawfish pop-ups. Four rods were placed in the vicinity of my marker, two to the left and two to the right.

A couple of hours after our arrival we were fishing the Orient. Time for an aperitif!!! As we were sipping a glass of rose a Dutch angler fishing the next peg came round for a chat. Accepting the offered glass of wine he sat down and talked with us for several hours, by the end of which we'd demolished 3 bottles of the extremely palatable vino. Memories of this first night thus, remain somewhat vague, but I do have faint recollections of venturing out in the boat a couple of times only to return fishless. I awoke with a sore head and fragile stomach. This is not the first time a session with Laurent has ended with me crashed out in my bivvy, some people just never learn!

The first 24 hours ended with Laurent landing a small mirror of around 18 pounds an myself losing 2 fish in the weed. The second night I vowed not to touch a drop and concentrate on the fishing. During the early evening it started to rain hard and I had a run on one of my right hand rods, which resulted in a 19lb mirror.

It transpired that during the "Vidange" a couple of years ago several thousand small carp were introduced from the connecting canal. These fish, which are growing fast, now make up the bulk of the catches on the lake, fish varying from 12-25 pounds.

As the weather closed in, the wind increased in force and the rain really lashed down. Sitting under my brolly, drinking coffee we contemplated the night and our chances of more action. Encouragingly fish were showing around the bay. Suddenly I had two beeps on my right hand rod and then it screamed off. A sign of a big fish. I jumped into the boat and set off to combat the fish, with Laurent's words ringing in my ears,

"Big fish, monster!".

Such fights are always fraught with difficulty, but incredibly exhilarating. As the rain increased in intensity, it only served to heighten the thrill of playing an Orient carp. Within seconds, despite neoprene waders and wet weather gear I was soaked through. But I remained in contact with the fish. After about five minutes I was directly above it and able to apply direct pressure. It felt heavy, a plodding weight pulling my small embarkation against the wind, another sign of a good fish. I had great difficulty in lifting it from the bottom, 23 feet below me. After about 10 minutes a golden flank appeared on the surface in front of me. Some how during the fight it had kited round and picked up one of my other lines. I could see the line running across the fishes cavernous mouth, pulling on my hook hold. I knew I had to get it in the net quickly or it too would be lost. I pulled hard to direct the fish towards my net but the counter weight of the snagged line kept the fish tantalisingly beyond my reach. Panic was setting in, the fish was beaten, but I was unable to net it. This stalemate situation seemed to last for ages. Eventually in desperation I grabbed my amnesia leader and hand lined. Amazingly, as the fish lay doggo, the whole lot moved towards me and I was able to scoop it up in my net. I let out a cry of elation as I lifted the heavy weight into the boat and made my way back the bank. As I accosted Laurent's first words were

" Et alors?,"

"I don't know" I said "Looks a thirty." As he took the net from me he shouted

"Quoi! Are you crazy? Its a forty at least."

On the scales it went 42 pounds on the dot. Only a pound off my PB.

After a photo or two we returned the fish to the water and Laurent finally had an excuse to open his bottle of Scotch. I joined him in a quick celebratory drink, soaked to the skin but extremely happy to have finally caught a true Orient fish. Ten minutes later Laurent was away too, but this time it wasn't to be and the hook pulled on a heavy fish. I finally hit the hay around 2am.

The rain continued to pour, and I shivered in my damp sleeping bag, as I was still thoroughly wet. There seemed little point in changing as everything pointed to further action during the night. A hour later I was in again this time the wind must have been close to gale force and try as I might I just couldn't launch the boat. Wading out in my neoprene chest waders I pulled the boat with me and climbed aboard. I soon found myself blown back into my battery of rods and the nearby trees, despite the weight of the fish, which was taking line. It was becoming obvious that I wasn't going anywhere in the boat. What to do? I really had only two choices try to play the fish in from the bank, through 150 yards of thick weed or put the rod back on the rest and wait till morning and hope when the wind had dropped she would still be on the end. Neither option really appealed, but wading out as far as I dare I had a go from the bank.

Amazingly after a heave-ho of about 10 minutes the fish came through the weed and I found my self gaining line and playing it in the shallow water between myself and the bank. I could see it was a common and not a bad fish. I eventually got it in the net and waded back to the bank. It's length made me think it was a heavier fish than it turned out to be, but at 28lb 8oz was a very nice common carp by anyone's standards.

The rain persisted for then next day and a half and we were fortunate enough to experience the most intense action I have ever seen at the Orient. Fish were crashing out and topping all over the bay, and more particularly over our markers.

We continued to get runs and at one stage we were both playing fish simultaneously. At another time I had just rowed out to place my baited rig by the marker, before I could get back to the bank it was away. Laurent struck the rod and as I paddled back towards him he waded out to hand me the rod.

Most of the fish we were catching were commons, around the 15-25 pound mark. Not huge fish by Orient standards, but a good sign that in the next couple of years this famous water will really be a venue to watch.

In the middle of the week the rain finally abated and the sun put in an appearance. Our confidence began to wane as the return of the fine weather generally spells the end of the action. Over the next 24 hours so it transpired and no further action was experienced on our rods. I was due to leave on the Friday, where as Laurent and another friend Thierry, who had joined us on the Thursday, planned to see out the weekend.

As luck would have it, at dawn on the final morning I had a belter and set of to combat what was surely to be my last fish of the session. I pumped my way out to the fish and all went solid. I was well and truly weeded. Try as I might I just couldn't shift it. Again I resorted to hand lining. I wrapped the amnesia leader around my sleeves and pulled, certain that it was for a break. To my great surprise, the whole lot tore free from the weed and I found myself hand lining the fish directly. I quickly picked up the rod and was once again in control. The fish bored deeply below me. It was akin to boat fishing at sea, as I applied pressure to the fish. It circled around in the deep water then with a couple of knocks came up towards the surface. With surprising ease I was able to enmesh my prize and I was able to let out the now customary "Orient"cry of joy. The fish weighed 36lb.

As predicted it was the last action I was to experience and as midday tolled I packed my rods and loaded my van for the, fortunately, short journey home.

In all we had 17 runs between us, twelve of which came to my rods for 10 fish the best ones going 42lb, 36lb, 28lb 8oz and 23lb 4oz. We did not run into the true giants of the Forest but a Belgian angler to our right had fish of 26lb, 40lb 8oz, 46lb 4oz & 48lb 2oz.

The big fish are still present even if a few were lost in the vidange it was not as serious as we have been lead to believe. The influx of new fish will, I believe revive the water so that it will continue, in years to come, to produce the giant carp we have always associated with it.

For one session though I had been able to crack the water, an inspiration for future trips, and who knows, one day - a really big fish.

Fishing: Fly of the Week — tough Damsebaetis

As fickle as the weather this time of year, ice-fishing off just as incoherent. A few years ago a friend of mine, Clark Pierce, came up with a large stillwater attractor nymph he called the Damsebaetis. The fly pattern is a wonderful combination of characteristics of the common damsel fly and callibaetis nymphs found in most stillwaters. As I tend to do with a lot of flying, I came up with a variant of this pattern using a bead of the thorax and UV tough skin to the body. The preferred technique for this pattern is to fish under a slip indicator and give a bit of traffic if you fish. The traditional sinking line presentation will work as well.Imitation? Manufacturing cheap carp fishing bait - the reality of the recipes, the works!

So how do you begin to formulate a homemade bait that will compete with all those expensive ready made baits? This is a long piece on this subject that will give you a practical insight into the formulation and impacts of using highly successful economical homemade baits against more expensive ready made baits - so read on!

Many anglers seem to get the completely wrong idea and actually begin with thoughts about flavours and ingredients instead of the most powerful and obvious starting point, the one that will guarantee success! When your starting point is the fish themselves you are thinking much more closely like a fish than like an angler who has all kinds of personal preferences about baits which very frequently bear very little relationship with what carp senses most respond to in terms of feeding.

For instance, I went on a rare trip to a commercial water last week and using my own homemade baits, I out-fished the 15 guys fishing during the period fished who were literally all using popular ready made baits. So what does this say about the thinking and fishing approach of the average carp angler? Some of the guys either side of me were getting very frustrated with their ready made baits which had cost them in some cases over 10 pounds a kilogram. Also the baits they were using have been very successful in the past on a range of waters including this very one fished and some other ready made baits other guys were using were newer to the water than the longer-established ready made baits. My baits which had never been experienced by the fish before did so well for many powerful reasons.

I even showed my baits to some of the other anglers. I explained that my free baits and hook baits were quite savoury and sweet tasting at the same time and had a taste that lingered on the tongue with only had a very subtle smell. The guys did not seem impressed with these which is a shame because they certainly out-fished the fruit flavoured ready made bait someone had given me to field test which these guys seemed to like a lot more even though it did not perform as well!

Ideally you will begin with the fishes essential dietary requirements because by doing this you are guaranteed to give fish many reasons to eat your bait. But in a competitive fishing environment where many baits supply quality nutrition many other factors give you the edge. For example if your bait actually performs better in water at pulling fish into your swim for instance, or at improving the amount of bait fish are willing to repeatedly swallow even beyond the amounts they would usually feel full up. You might have palatability improving additives that increase the likelihood that your baits are actually consumed instead of merely being mouthed.

It is a fact that you can make your own homemade baits so potently stimulatory that carp will actually rub their bellies and fins on them to get even more of those goodies out of them. Such potent over-dosed baits are ideal for pulling maximum numbers of fish into your swim while you can use under-dosed hook baits that fish will devour instantly. (Note in this example I am not referring to over-dosing using flavours.)

There are so many incredible secrets about baits. The way baits interact with water is absolutely vital and the leverage of the substances of your baits is severely limited by your skills at feeding free baits in the right volumes, regularity and patterns and so on to suit every fishing situation.

Altogether too many ready made carp baits are simply too indigestible to offer very many competitive advantages over better designed baits and many ready made baits offer so many bog standard ingredients that carp have been force-fed on for decades that they simply do not need to eat them as the essential requirements they supply have pretty much been permanently satiated.

One of the biggest secrets is to offer your carp something different and preferably unique to you alone. This might be just one ingredient or additive or the actual omission of many of the more frequently used ingredients and additives. The fish really know the difference and I know that this is a very strong reason for some of the big bait companies to use a product called Cypry Spice from a bait company called Willis Worms in Wales to replace the old very familiar Robin Red.

Just one way you can achieve this is in the unique and purposely differentiated ratios, levels and combination's of ingredients and additives in both powdered and liquid forms that you apply in your baits (and ground baits) within digestible and practicable limitations. Personally I prefer to source unique additives and ingredients and natural flavour components that all enhance the impacts of each other as much as possible to induce repeated carp feeding for as long as possible. Experiencing this in action while actually fishing is such a great buzz of confidence and this is one of the most exciting things about preparing, making and using homemade baits

For example for my session last week I made up a large volume of extremely cheap bait based mainly around a combination of a liquid fish protein (not the all too familiar L030,) and fish oil, and a high PC lecithin used in very high levels. This was added to a very simple base mix which contained the basic dietary essential carp requirements and had a very good and practically proven digestibility. This means that this bait is eaten and digested comparatively quickly at relatively little energy cost to the fish compared to so many other baits. This also means that the fish get to instinctively feel all the components and benefits of eating this bait and very quickly are ready to consume more of it which as you can imagine is a huge advantage when session fishing!

While fishing my session last week I was baiting up extremely regularly to combat the impacts of bait-robbing roach and bream shoals and still getting big fish rolling over my baits and seeing fish feeding on the baits along with accompanying fish catches. It got to the stage that the ready made bait guys fishing either side of me were scratching their heads and simply hoping for a bite. I noticed these guys only had 2 or three kilograms of bait and were introducing that sparingly, not even realising that the bulk of it was being whittled away within the hour by marauding roach and other smaller species!

Sure you can catch fish fishing small amounts of bait or single hook baits but actually controlling fish behaviours by leveraging the impacts of free baiting is one of the most powerful edges in carp fishing and is the cornerstone of top level match-fishing success! I used to fish with a guy who match-fished for England youth as well as a friend from school called Dion who match fished for England for many years and ground bait figured in the strategic thinking in many ways and although I was able to use this to out-fish them while carp fishing and sea fishing, they both taught me loads along the way and of course we never stop learning!

A very big part of their problem just how expensive their ready made baits were, after all few anglers can keep spending 10 pound a kilogram on bait added to high ticket prices, food, traveling costs etc, and be able to use enough bait to compete by actually leveraging bait to maximum effect. By making your own bait of course this is not a problem and in fact is the only way I can afford to compete with bait-sponsored anglers myself. On such waters the use of boilies really is important because the smaller species are very definitely not so small and will destroy a carefully introduced bed of particles or ground bait or pellets within minutes. When the roach reach 3 pounds and average 1 pound alongside other specimen tench, crucian carp etc the application of the correct free bait is crucial for outstanding success.

The big point here is the actual leverage of bait and being able to maximize its impacts on carp. To do this you need to sustain enough dissolved substances in the water in and around your swim to pull those carp in and keep them interested long enough for the biggest fish to compete amongst themselves and give you a very good shot at a multiple big fish catch - by design!

You simply cannot do this consistently when fishing on a budget with a only a couple of kilograms of bait on waters teaming with specimen-sized smaller species, be it giant roach, bream, crucian carp, single figure carp, specimen tench, nuisance catfish and others. The attentions of all these fish can be harnessed to actually attract more carp into your swim buy only if you use enough bait in the right way in correct situations to do it, (many top anglers really are masters at doing this!)

In fact many very consistent big carp anglers are not particularly technically skilled but have an incredible if not instinctive talent for maximising the application and leverage of the impacts of bait. I feel this subject is much misunderstood and is a vital leveller of talent, time and money between anglers of lesser resources who deserve to catch and not blank or suffer comparatively poor catches when exceptional catches are actually within their reach with enough knowledge put into practice!

I saw all around me guys using pellets, standard 14 and 18 millimeter boilies for example, ready made ground bait balls and method mixes that the big roach shoals were tearing into. A lot of the guys were reeling in with their ready made baits completely whittled off their rigs so you can imagine the impact of the small fish on their free baits!

By contrast I was applying 2 distinct types of baits to my swim to counteract the problem of smaller fish and also to allow the carp to get a smell and taste of my baits and leading them to making mistakes with my hook baits! By strange coincidence, much of the bait I had prepared had been designed to deal with the crayfish in another water I was going to fish and did not. In this particular case my boilies were of 2 types; soft semi-boiled boilies for free baiting, and rock hard super-boosted hook bait boilies absolutely packed with naturally potent triggers and other vital substances to provide competitive edges.

Many of my free baits were well over 25 millimeters in size and none were made to be round but rather all were odd shaped and were in fact not prepared by rolling at all. Only a small proportion of the free baits were of around the standard 12 or 14 millimeter sizes. These free baits were designed to dissolve within about 4 hours of immersion thereby doing the maximum work in pulling and triggering fish while not giving them much time to actually eat them! The vast majority of ready made boilies will not break down for at least 8 to 36 hours or longer so you can see how much their effectiveness is limited by their actual form; the preference of average anglers for durable hard boilies as free baits and hook baits has many drawbacks!

I have seen with my own eyes very big carp actually fanning away standard round boilies in order to be able to pick up smaller odd shaped baits in safety. (On the lake bed odd shaped baits are very often standard round boilies which have been in the water a while, long enough for smaller fish to whittle them down in size and shape and which wary carp view with far less suspicion as these hook them far less than whole round baits!)

By contrast though, my hook baits and a proportion of matching free baits were of a totally different design and were super-boosted with natural triggers and were rock hard. These baits were of very small size and about as far from conventional machine-rolled shape, texture, density etc that you could imagine. These baits in large sizes where used in PVA bags and a very hard paste in large sized pieces were also used to very good effect.

This might all sound like common sense and to some of you like hard work, but I paid my money to fish the commercial fishery just the same as the other 15 anglers there but I spent less on my bait and still had better results despite them using the most popular brands of ready made baits. In part due to my 30 years in carp fishing, my own scientific research and long bait-making experience and my fellow BCSG friends my interest in bait and fish senses, metabolism, health, etc and my ability to improve my baits has come a very long way, and every week I get to learn new things to give me more competitive fishing edges and even more economical baits!

You may not be into master antioxidants, metabolic stimulants, bioactive flavour components or sorting the first to third limiting amino acids in your bait recipes. But I can assure you that just a few of the most powerful secrets will multiply your catches to the degree you will shudder at just how much time in hours and money in under-performing baits you will have wasted over the coming years in your possible ignorance. Having said that no-one knows everything about baits and most bait company bosses appear to have certain gaps in their knowledge.

There is are hard core of bait company bosses who by definition have been doing it for decades longer than anyone else and know far more in theoretical and practical terms as a result but even these top guys often have to compromise performance aspects of their bait due to the actual sensory and practical preferences of their human customers and their price sensitivity too! This gives the homemade bait maker enormous opportunities to out-fish very many popular ready made baits; certainly many of the most successful homemade baits I have made could not be offered commercially because buyers simply would not relate to them as conventional carp baits at all and would not buy them; unfortunately such is the mentality of the average angler and shows just how much they have been conditioned as much as carp! Having an open mind about bait is a definite advantage!

There are also very many bait company guys out there who are really just starting out with pretty limited actual working knowledge of even a handful of recipes of ready made baits they might be offering. Certain further gaps in knowledge might be in connection with various aspects of carp senses operations and in maximizing their exploitation potential, or in regards to how certain sweet substances impact physiologically to change DNA, carp preferences and taste cells cross adaptation impacts, or what to include to actually regulate carp blood sugar levels beneficially.

Significantly it might be some bait company bosses over-look completely the long-term (behaviour-forming) impacts of more obscure antioxidant additives on carp preferences, or the deeper aspects of enhancing impacts of certain non, semi-essential and essential amino acids for various effects using any of a whole range of substances, or even in regards to exactly how flavours work etc! (Many of the best flavours work well beyond simple potentiation of nerve cells. Never forget that as carp detect certain substances down to as little as 6 parts per million concentration, every single thing you put in a bait and in the swim can have impacts on results to some degree even if you cannot smell it!)

Every aspect of your bait can be used as a competitive advantage so attention to detail is of vital importance because it is this that can very seriously multiply your catches!

As a couple of quick tips, even if you have been making baits for a while, why not try out very high levels of Ccmoore Feedstim XP powder in your baits with their awesome Odyssey XXX liquid, or why not be very different and try this unique combination of premium grade salmon protein, high PC lecithin and pure Scottish salmon oil from my friend Phil at CW Baits and Carp fishing pellets. (This combination did fantastic last week and it also out-fished all the ready made baits it was fished against this past winter and was a combination I chose to exploit last week in my very cheap but successful homemade baits!) Phil started out as a premium koi food supplier and now offers some unique exceptional bait ingredients and very high quality very digestible baits (amino-sorted!) I know he is looking for some bait testers due to expanding his range of HNV baits so do contact him right away!)

I hope this makes you consider what savings you can make over the years and also the improved catches over your peers you are potentially missing out on right now! River Monsters: True Stories of the Ones that Didn't Get Away

River Monsters: True Stories of the Ones that Didn't Get Away
I’m Jeremy Wade, biologist and fishing detective. For twenty-five years, I’ve explored our planet’s remotest rivers and lakes, hunting for monster-sized fish. It’s become something of an obsession for me. . . .
A?
Called “the greatest angling explorer of his generation” (Independent on Sunday), Jeremy Wade, host of Animal Planet’s wildly popular TV series River Monsters, takes viewers where no wildlife program has gone before, revealing the creatures that lurk in the murky depths of our planet’s inland waterways. Now, Wade goes truly beneath the surface, disclosing full details of how he tracks down and catches each species while also recounting the off-camera highlights of his extraordinary life. From his arrest as a suspected spy in Southeast Asia to a plane crash in the Amazon, every page of River Monsters is packed with adventure. Each chapter unfolds an enthralling detective story, where fishermen’s tales of underwater man-eaters and aquatic killers are subjected to scientific scrutiny. Follow Wade step-by-step as, armed with just a fishing line, he closes in on his prey and separates fact from fiction. From the heart of the Congo, where he wrestles with supernatural goliath tigerfish, to the depths of the Amazon, where the most feared creature is one that could fit in your palm, the results are fish of staggering proportions and terrifying demeanor. Wade also reveals monsters from upcoming episodes, including deadly electric eels, a giant described as a cross between a shark and a chainsaw, and a snake-like beast that truly is the stuff of legend.
A?
In the tradition of the most gripping adventure writing, River Monsters shows that there’s more to this world than what’s visible on the surface. As Wade says, with a fishing line anything is possiblea€?sometimes it can even reveal the future, or at least one possible version of it. In similar fashion, Wade’s writings are much more than exhilarating stories: they reveal a vision of the world more awe-inspiring than any individual myth made flesh. Ultimately, River Monsters explores the real mysteries that still exist, capturing the story of one man’s obsessiona€?and his relentless pursuit of the truth.

Quality fish feed; What are ingredients required for fish nutrition, growth and health

INTRODUCTION:

There is a lot of confusion about what constitutes a quality flake food (or pellet).
The aquarist needs to understand that there are similarities and differences between fish and other animals. For example; Fish get most of their energy needs from fat, but in humans carbohydrates are a better source. Another point is amino acids (the building blocks of proteins); almost all animals have different amino acid needs. For example; Cats need Taurine in there diet or they can suffer heart problems.

Then there is the speed of digestion, some fish such as goldfish tend to have slower digestive tracts (I like to compare it to a horse, but there are major differences such as the stomach). But the similarity is that if too high a protein or the wrong protein diet is fed, the horse may colic, and in goldfish they will build up intestinal gas and infections including swim bladder or dropsy will ensue. The wrong amino acids in any fish will lead to aquarium pollution (extra ammonia) and renal failure.

Another note about fish food is what carnivores need. Carnivorous fish often consume whole animals including intestinal contents, which often include plant material. A quality fish food for carnivores must include vegetable matter such as spirulina.

HERE ARE A FEW BUILDING BLOCK INGREDIENTS:

AMINO ACIDS:

An amino acid is any molecule that contains both amines (organic compounds that contain nitrogen as the key atom. Structurally amines resemble ammonia) and Carboxylic acids (organic acids characterized by the presence of a carboxyl group). Amino acids are used as the basic components of proteins.

The net protein utilization is profoundly affected by the limiting amino acid content or protein quality (the essential amino acid found in the smallest quantity in the foodstuff), and somewhat affected by salvage of essential amino acids in the body. It is therefore a good idea to mix foodstuffs that have different weaknesses in their essential amino acid distributions. This limits the loss of nitrogen through deamination and increases overall net protein utilization. Eggs (whether fish or even chicken) have the highest protein quality of any source. Which makes hard boiled egg crumbles an excellent food source for fry.

DL-methionine is an essential amino acid for producing the "Lionhead" feature in goldfish. High levels of methionine can be found in the vegetable proteins of spinach, green peas, and garlic. DL-methionine can also be found in fish meal.

Bottom line; Not all protein sources are equal. An analogy used at a pet food seminar I attended was this: You can achieve the protein analysis on many pet foods with a used pair of leather shoes, but leather shoes contain little usable proteins.

FATS:

Molecular compounds that are generally soluble in organic solvents and largely insoluble in water. Fats are important for insulating body organs against shock, maintaining body temperature, and promoting healthy cell function. They also serve as energy stores for the body. Fats are broken down in the body to release glycerol and free fatty acids. The glycerol can be converted to glucose by the liver and thus used as a source of energy. The fatty acids are the main source of energy in fish, especially for many tissues, such as heart and skeletal muscle. Another important function for fats are for vitamin absorption. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble, meaning they can only be digested, absorbed, and transported in conjunction with fats.

CARBOHYDRATES:

Molecular substances which include the sugars, starches, gums and celluloses. The common attributes of carbohydrates are that they contain only the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, and that their combustion will yield carbon dioxide plus one or more molecules of Water.
Most of the carbohydrates that enter the diet of fish are of plant origin. Carnivorous fish such as groupers, therefore, deal with little carbohydrate. Indeed, experiments have shown that these species are ill-equipped to handle significant quantities of raw carbohydrate, in their diets. The ability of fish to digest carbohydrates depends on their ability to elaborate amylase. All species of fish have been shown to secrete at least some amylase. It has also been demonstrated that activity of this enzyme was greatest in herbivores.

Carbohydrates are not a superior energy source for fish over protein or fat although digestible carbohydrates do spare protein for tissue building. Also, unlike in mammals, glycogen is not a significant storage depot of energy in fish. The more efficient metabolism of amino acids over carbohydrates (glucose) for energy could be due to the ability of fish to excrete nitrogenous waste as ammonia from their gills without the high cost of energy in converting the waste to urea.

FISH FOOD SOURCES:

FISH MEAL:

Fish meal has been widely used as a protein source for many years for fish. Two basic types of fish meal are produced; (1) produced from fishery waste (salmon, tuna, etc.) that are associated with the processing of various edible human fishery products and (2) When specific fish (herring, menhaden, pollack, etc.) are harvested just for the purpose to produce fish meal. The fish can be dried directly drying or cooking prior to drying and oil extracted. In addition to being a by-product of human fish production it is also a by-product associated with fish oil production, which is where most commercial fish food obtain fish meal from.

Fish meal can be classified as two basic types; (1) fishery waste associated with the processing of fish for human consumption, again the primary source. (2) Fish that are only used for the production of fish meal. This is the best source, listed on ingredients as "Whole Fish Meal" or "White Fish Meal".

SHRIMP MEAL:

Shrimp meal can be made from either cull shrimp that are being processed before freezing or from whole shrimp that is not of suitable quality for human consumption. The material to be made into shrimp meal is dried (sun or using a dryer) and then ground. Shrimp meal has been used in trout and salmon diets as a source of pigments to impart the desirable color in the tissues.
Shrimp meal has been found to be an acceptable supplemental protein source for fish, but inferior to whole fish meal.

SQUID MEAL:

Squid Meal is made from squid viscera portions from cannery plants including egg and testis.
Squid Meal is high digestibility of protein source, which provides a full range of amino acids for fish. It provides various kinds of vitamins and minerals and also 1.0-1.5% of cholesterol that is suitable for fish fry and young fish.

BRINE SHRIMP:

Just over a centimeter in size, the adult brine shrimp (Artemia) is a common food source for fish. They can be purchased at many Pet Store as adults, Freeze dried or even eggs. The eggs look like a powdery brown substance but in reality the substance is thousands of cysts--eggs surrounded by protective cases. When added to water, these cysts will hatch into shrimp nauplii within a few hours.

As a food source brine shrimp are relatively limited (mostly because of their high water content). They are a good source of carotene for color and act as a natural laxative in fish digestive systems. The proteins them do supply are of high quality. Depending on the source they also can supply vegetable matter due to their consumption of algae.

SOYBEAN MEAL:

Use of soybean products in the aquaculture industry have become the focus of protein substitution in fish food around the world. The high protein level makes it a key ingredient for aquaculture feeds. Soybean meal is considerably less expensive than traditionally used marine animal meals. The limiting amino acid content of soybean meal is high, but not on the level of Whole fish meal and especially egg.

SPIRULINA:

Spirulina is a blue-green plant plankton rich in raw protein and seven major vitamins: A1, B1, B2, B6, B12, C and E. It naturally contains beta-carotene, color enhancing pigments, and whole range of minerals. In addition, it contains all essential fatty acids and eight amino acids required for complete nutrition. Spirulina is different from other algae and is similar to bacteria in many ways, occupying a niche between plants and bacteria. Spirulina is similar to cyanobacteria in structure (spiral shape, unlike true plant plankton), which can be toxic. Spirulina Blue- Green algae are recognized by the body (fish in particular) as a bacterium, causing an increase in antibodies, which in turn increases disease resistance. Spirulina is also high in usable or digestible amino acids.
Spirulina is probably one of the best fish food ingredients available, including for carnivores.

WHOLE WHEAT:

Carbohydrates as explained earlier are not the best source of energy in fish, but still can be useful, especially when whole wheat is used. One reason is for roughage, especially in goldfish and koi, but also for other fish for the wheat-germ found in whole wheat is a natural source of vitamin E, an important vitamin to promote healthy growth and fish color.

SUMMARY:

Compare TetraMin to some of the facts I have explained, then compare foods such as HBH Tropical and Marine Flake; Spirulina One Flake; Hikari and Sanyu Foods, such as Sanyu Betta Gold.
The difference is quite clear for long term growth and health.

Buy a fish tank, search? Do you want a large fish tank or a small fish tank?

We look at what is best for you and your House fish tank:

A fish tank is an enclosure such as a tank, pool or bowl; This is for the keep pet used, fish or other aquatic animals such as crabs, molluscs, etc.. Is today the word Aquarium often used for a fish tank, although Aquarium refers also to a place of live aquatic animals and plants to the public. A fish bowl is to hold live fish specifically to denote a transparent Bowl.

The following are the things you need whether you decide to buy a small fish tank or a large fish tank:

1. Fish! (and feed!)

2. Plant

3. Gravel

4. Filter

5. Pump

6. Heating

7. Lights

8. Chemicals

9. Decorations

With regard to the fish, you must decide whether you plan to have a saltwater aquarium or a freshwater fish tank.
Another aspect to your decision making come as it is close in the costs down that a small fish tank will be cheaper than a large fish tank.

Live plants are a significant presence in each Aquarium for many reasons. First, they have the Aquarium a natural and attractive look to, and secondly, they offer the pet fish with a natural source of food. Live plants reduce the growth of algae in the fish tank, but most important is living plants, produce oxygen through photosynthesis and add it to breathe the water for the fish.

Why would you want a large fish tank?

There are many ways where small is beautiful; in this matter, the opposite can however be correct. A large fish tank is always better than small because can it show more variety and larger size keep fish species that are more interesting than the small.

A large fish tank comes with an extra large pump for oxygen, extra thick glass, and you need a good filter. You need to keep when you plan your large fish tank for marine fish in the eye to two litres of water per inch of fish.

The beauty of a large fish tank is definitely something you can overlook or ignore. Just imagine for a moment a wall size fish tank to one side of the bedroom or lounge a live wall mounted.

In addition to the sheer size one can leave the decorations that you can in it, as also the fish varieties that it can house so, awe-struck. Therefore, if you can afford it you should go in any case for a large fish tank - it will add extraordinary glamour to any room or place.

The disadvantages of a big fish tank

The large fish tank is nice, but maintenance is a Alptraum.Filtration of water can be supported by natural recycling of water However, the oxygen supply can cause major risks, if the pump does not to the necessary oxygen for the fish.

A small fish tank provides you with the best of both worlds

For those people who have pets, but fear of commitment, which can choose fish as pets are going to. Fish need not hiking, bath, or special visits to the vet, if they are not good.

Everything you want from a pet without the liability can these small fish tank you a pet. Fish can recognize as well it as any other pet be trained - you and they do little somersault if she you the Aquarium coming close to. Goldfish can just 10 years in the Aquarium.
The following should be remembered if for your fish tank maintenance:

o, that you a minimum capacity of 20-gallon buy should fish tank.

o If you use washing the filter tap water you don't; Rather, use aquarium water. In this way, the friendly bacteria will not be killed.

o never overfeed your fish: they die if they are overfed.

o If fish are sick have an other tank, where you transfer them, until they recover.

o select freshwater fish about a saltwater fish, because they are easier to manage.

o install a good filter, heating and lighting.

Once purchased you have your fish tanks and it set up, you must add the decorations. This will be hobby very relaxing the finishing touches to the beginning of the year.

Night fishing tips - information on how to put it up for night fishing!

Fishing in the early hours of the night is calm and soothing sometimes. But, if the bite on watch out! Excitement is everywhere! One of the reasons why I love night fishing is because there is very little fishing pressure. Know only very few fishermen enjoy the fantastic possibilities, have when you go night fishing for all species such as Crappie, walleye, catfish or bass probably because they just don't, such as. You will be amazed at the variety of different fish that you caught in the night, even if you are targeting a specific species of fish such as Pike-perch. Today I want to you some simple night fishing tips that will help you become a better night fishermen.

# 1 Underwater fishing lights.

I have always that element at the top of the list of my night fishing equipment and for good reason. The best diving florescent use 25 40watts making, and they rays 1000 to 3000 lumens per Rohr.Es's amazing how much plankton these lights will draw. These small organisms are the primary source of food for the fish, the game as bass like to attack most small bait. Bait are the main ingredient, which is necessary to have a successful night fishing trip . If these lamps are absolutely useful in the production of game fish such as Pike-perch on your night . If you have a swarm or ball of bait fish your underwater fishing light can all happen. All what you need to do is cast out your rigs close to the edge of your light source and you're ready for an exciting night. I love night fishing because of the variety of game fish, which you can catch that during the night. You can catch pike-perch, catfish, Crappie and bass! It does not matter, they are all their for a simple Mahlzeit.Und is it in my opinion, I could only very few of these fish without a good underwater fishing light source captured.

Lights # 2 surface night fishing .

Surface lighting is very important, not only for fishing , but for your safety. I would like to identify two primary areas, that surface lighting helps you. The number is a reason for your safety. For a very minimal need you at least your nightclub on if you are night fishing. You must authenticate to other night fishermen and recreational boaters. There was a much craft accidents because they didn't do very simple step of identification. The second reason is also very important. The light will attract over the surface source and insects Pro-Ject, yes I said insects attract! Insects attract bait and lures attract Mare wild fish! So, make sure that you outside hang these lights from your boat so that you keep most of the insects away from you. If you provide a type of Coleman Lantern for night fishing you safely shades you to the page in the boat, so that reflect the light back off and over the water. This limits the amount of insects that attack you in the boat.

# 3 Preliminary planning is important! Before you decide to go night fishing it is very important to do some preliminary planning. Make a checklist of all the elements that are necessary after dark. Also out and scout the areas you want night fish for the evening. Do have a GPS to select it, that would be great. If you identify no GPS country brands, which you identify after night fall.

I hope that the information that I have underwater fishing lights you on your next fishing trip helps! God bless and a good day for you.

Fish advice and tips

I have been fishing for over forty years both fresh water and at sea where I for many years owned and skippered a charter fishing boat. All fishermen are the same, no matter how many fish they catch it's always the same story, why did I not catch more or bigger fish. Maybe it would help to rectify this by remembering the following tips.

Tackle

Today there is a huge selection available for every kind of fishing and most of the top brands extremely expensive. This does not mean that you cannot catch plenty of good quality fish without spending a fortune.

Decide on the type of fishing you want to pursue and kit yourself out accordingly within your budget but don't expect you can use your fresh water tackle for sea fishing or vice versa. Ensure you have all that's necessary, carry out a regular inventory of your tackle box and obviously maintain all your tackle as new. One important piece of equipment that so many overlook is a good quality stainless steal and very sharp knife.

Also included in your tackle box should be a reasonable size first aid kit including protective sun cream especially if sea angling.

Weather

Whether to go or not to go? If sea fishing it's obviously up to the skipper to decide if conditions are suitable but it is also your choice. If it is your first experience of sea fishing and it is blowing a force four or more do not go, it could put you off sea angling for life. So many times have I had fishermen turn up for a trip and when I warned them it was going to be rough and advised those not experienced to cancel, had them tell me,"No problem we have fished in rough weather many times" only for half of them to be begging me to take them back within an hour. It is unfair to the others on board if you go on a trip without being 90% sure you will not get seasick.
The weather also effects the fishing, the old fishermen's saying, "The east wind doth blow, no fish will show" has a lot of truth in it from my experience. I have found the most productive days to be overcast with a light to moderate wind. Cloudless totally calm days while a pleasure to be at sea are not always so good for the fishing.

For fresh water fishing weather is also a factor, again those cloudless hot days seem to put the fish to sleep whereas a nice breeze and slightly overcast sky is better. Wet days are also good although not pleasant for the angler, but I have had some of my best catches in these conditions. Try also to fish with the wind in your face providing it is not too strong to prevent casting. During the summer the water warms up and fish seek deeper cooler water so a nice deep pool under the shade of some trees should be a good choice.

Attire and Approach

Remember above all you are a hunter, so dress and act accordingly. A suitably camouflaged and waterproof set of clothes is essential for the fresh water angler and stealth must be used when approaching your swim. If you see other anglers who are on a day out with the family keep well away as for sure they will be making a lot of noise.

When netting your catch place your landing net in the water and bring the fish to the net and try to avoid letting the fish thrash around on the surface. When replacing the fish do so very gently, don't just toss it back as I have seen so many anglers do which can not only harm the fish but will certainly disturb any nearby feeding on your ground bait.

For the sea angler clothing is vitally important although camouflage is not so important it must be of good enough quality to keep you warm and dry without being too bulky. Beware of the sun, it never seems so hot at sea but believe me you burn quicker. If you must expose you lilly white body make sure you apply adequate and high factor cream. The wind will burn your face and can chap your lips so a large brimmed hat is a good idea plus some lip salve.

While at sea keep the noise to a minimum, you should be wearing soft soled waterproof boots. Avoid banging the lid of your tackle box shut, letting your rod bang against the side of the boat, dropping you can of drink on the deck, etc. I remember one skipper who threatened to throw anyone who whistled while on his boat, into the sea. He called it "Whistling up the wind"
There is only one time you need to cast while boat fishing and that is for spinning but ask the skippers permission first because this is dangerous to other anglers.. I always insisted that only one angler be allowed to spin and that had to be done from the fore deck away from the other anglers.

One good tip about fishing from a boat, always try and fish from the stern, you are less likely to get tangled up with other anglers lines and from my experience anglers in this position catch more fish. Maybe it's because the experienced anglers always go for this spot!

Bait.

It goes without saying that bait and ground bait needs to be of the best quality and fresh. For the sea angler a good skipper will have a supply of bait but will also try and catch some fresh mackerel or sand eels etc. while on the way to his selected mark.
The fresh water angler must decide on the bait to be used and ensure he has a sufficient supply. Nothing is more infuriating than to run out of a bait that is constantly catching fish.
Ground bait too must be fresh, no good expecting to use last weeks left- overs.
While ground baiting or attaching bait to the hook, ensure your hands are clean, not coated in sun cream or anything else that will spoil the bait. If you are a smoker wipe your hands thoroughly before handling either the ground bait or the hook bait, a good idea is to rub them in the grass or soil, if on a boat in the sea.

Conservation.

Fishing is, in regard to numbers participating, the biggest sport in the world with millions fishing every day. It should be obvious that it is vital to conserve the fish stock, whether it be sea fish a fresh water. Most sea fish are good to eat but what is the point in keeping and killing more than one can eat and it is criminal to kill undersize fish.

While fishing in Darwin a couple of years ago I was delighted to learn that all the charter boats now operate a policy of catch and return. All the boats have an adequate fish tank to keep alive enough fish till the end of the day when the anglers can choose the ones they are going to eat that evening, the rest being returned. Any fish too big for the tank are weighed and photographed and returned immediately. Gone are the days when anglers came ashore with the days catch to be strung up and photographed.

Fresh water anglers should have a keep net big enough to allow the fish to be returned unharmed at the end of the session but unless you are competition fishing it is better to weigh and photograph your fish and return immediately.

Conclusion.

Holiday with the family fishing in France

France is a country that has a wonderful variety of fishing from the North through to the South and caters for fly fishing, course and game fishing on a wide range of rivers and lakes. Plus there is plenty of coast line for the sea angler to enjoy as well.

CARP fishingcat fishing, not forgetting of course and are just some of the holidays that you can enjoy in France and whilst pike fishing some places cater for the dedicated angler, others are more family orientated with accommodation and activities for the non fishers.

There are several types of fishing holiday available and for trout fishing, you would need to book from around the middle to end of March, up until around the first week of September, which is the only time frame you are allowed to fish for trout in France.

In certain areas of France, salmon fishing is prohibited all year, so it is always best to check on the area you are going, prior to thinking that you will be able to get a licence for fly fishing, just like that.

Every country has numerous different is can catch regulations and France no exception, with specific rules in place for what type of fish you, when you are allowed to catch certain species of fish and what equipment you are allowed to fish with.

For some, this can be a daunting prospect, especially if you are not fluent in French, and although in some areas it will be easier than others to organise your fishing venue and licence, it is often easier to pre-organise your fishing holiday, so do try and get as much information as possible.

You must have a fishing licence to fish in rivers, streams and lakes throughout France unless these are privately owned or booked as a fishing holiday where the fishing licence requirements are normally included, but it is advisable to check this out before you travel!

If you need to obtain your own fishing permit, these can usually be obtained from the local fishing tackle shop or alternatively from the local bar or tobac. But if you are not sure on what is required then you can get advice from the local tourist information board, which can also provide maps of where you can and cannot fish.

If you are only going to be on holiday in France for a short time, then you can get what is known as the carte de Peche de Vacances, which covers on angler for up to fifteen consecutive days and can be used between 1st June and 30th November. However, outside of these dates an annual fishing licence is mandatory.

An annual permit may be used for the whole year but bear in mind that this will only be for one department unless you get it stamped for different areas that you may go to and this is something that you will need for all fresh water fishing.

When it comes to catfish and carp fishing, you can get a licence to do this in the local rivers or lakes, but the majority of people want to opt for a will carp fishing holiday on a dedicated lake. And when you go to a dedicated privately owned lake for carp fishingcat fishing, etc, then you will not normally have to worry about getting your own individual licence as this will already have either been sorted out by the travel agency or the owner under their regulations.

Boats are allowed to be used quite a bit in France, but you may need to have a separate part to your licence to enable you to use a boat, even if it is only for baiting. But be careful if you have an echo sounder in your boat, as you are not allowed to have both this and your tackle in the boat at the same time!

So, night fishing is prohibited in a lot of places in France, but when on a private fishing lake, or if with the correct licence on certain waters, this can be allowed. If not, then you can only fish half hour after sunrise to half hour before sunset. Some places on the rivers its, Moselle, Oise, Madine and Rhine, Rhone, etc do allow night fishing, but there are many places that do ban the use of a bivvy or tent even if night fishing is allowed and you may only get away with a brolly!

Sea fishing off of the Atlantic coast is excellent and you will be pleased to know that a licence is not needed, and you can go out on a boat to catch bass, conger eels and even tuna or surf cast for sea bream to name but a few.

Fly fishing for salmon and trout is available in lots of public canals and navigable rivers, but as with most countries, these will therefore contain other fish such as Pike, so beware! However some of the best places to try your hand at fly fishing are often owned by groups and in this case you would need to pay the owners for a permit to fish as well as having your licence.

Some of the best fishing salmon in France can be found in the Pyrenees Atlantiques, and the river Loire is also a major salmon fishery for France.

Some of the best fishing in France is for course fishing where you will find lots of different species, but with carp, catfish and pike being in abundance, especially in areas such as the Dordogne, lot and Charente Maritime. But if you like fishing for black bass, the river Rhone is known as a premier bass fishery, as is the river Saone.

The fishing dates and times do vary each year in France, so it is always advisable to check on these before planning your fishing holiday, and at the end of the day, forget about the headaches of the licences, just enjoy the whole experience, and you too could be in with a chance of catching a fish that has never been caught before!
