Neil Smith from Shetland, skipper of supporter, told late in Lerwick harbour about 2100 GMT on Thursday.
A helicopter crew find shrimp 10-meter boat near Whalsay, shortly before 1000 GMT Friday.
However, there is no sign of Mr. Smith, who was an experienced fisherman in his 50 's.
When the boat was discovered, it partly sank. His life-rafts and life jacket were also found nearby.
Alex Wylie, duty manager look at Shetland maritime rescue coordination centre, said survivor was located semi-submerged and heavily damaged at rocks.
He said: "sorry, no sign of one occupant was found. Search continues all day.
"We wanted to remind fishermen how important it is to always wear a personal flotation device on the deck.
Rescue crews focus their search on an area of 250 square miles around the head count at the northern tip of the island of Bressay.
